What is an Endodontic Emergency?
If the dental pulp tissues become inflamed and severely infected, you may need emergency endodontic treatment. These tissues are right in the tooth’s center and consist of the tooth nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissues, and extend from the tooth’s center into the root canals in the tooth roots.
The damage and infection can spread to the tissues surrounding the tooth, including the gum and jawbone. It is a problem that can cause extensive pain and facial swelling.
What Can Cause an Endodontic Emergency?
Usually, it occurs when bacteria in dental plaque penetrate the tooth and reach the dental pulp. This can result from untreated tooth decay. A tooth that has sustained trauma, such as a blow that cracks or fractures it, can also become infected and inflamed.
At other times, a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy can become reinfected, sometimes many years later. Yet another reason is when a dental filling has started to fail and leak, letting in harmful bacteria.
When Is Urgent Endodontic Care Needed?
You may need emergency endodontics if you are experiencing any of the following situations, including:
- A severe toothache.
- Toothache in a tooth that has previously received root canal therapy.
- The gum around the tooth is becoming swollen and tender, and may develop a pimple where pus has started to build up.
- A tooth starts feeling increasingly sensitive to temperature changes.
- Tooth discoloration.
- Severe damage to a tooth that has exposed the dental pulp.
Symptoms of a tooth infection or inflammation can include:
- Severe and continual toothache.
- Facial swelling.
- Fever.
- Feeling extremely unwell.
If you recognize the symptoms, get in touch with us so we can schedule an endodontist same-day appointment. Emergency care is extremely important, as you may have a dental abscess where the bacteria causing the infection have now begun to enter your bloodstream.
There is a risk that it could affect your overall health unless you have an emergency root canal or other appropriate care. The sooner you get in touch, the more likely we are to save your tooth.
What to Do If You Need an Emergency Root Canal
If you have a severe toothache, contact us immediately. Our experienced dental team will ask about your symptoms and give you useful advice on how to cope until your appointment.
We can advise you on taking suitable over-the-counter pain relief. Please do not put painkillers directly on the gums, as this will not relieve your toothache but could burn your gum tissue.
You may find it helpful to use a cold compress to relieve facial swelling and make you feel more comfortable, but you must see a dentist promptly.
Emergency Endodontic Treatments Offered

When you come in to see a dentist, we can quickly assess your tooth and may recommend one of the following treatments.
- Emergency Root Canal Therapy
An emergency root canal therapy will immediately relieve pain and help eliminate some of the bacteria causing the infection. Prompt care can preserve and protect your natural tooth so it can later be restored with a dental crown.
We may prescribe antibiotics when an infection is severe.
- Root Canal Retreatment
If a previous root canal has failed, a new infection may have developed at the tip of the tooth roots. In this case, we may be able to retreat the tooth with an apicoectomy, a procedure to remove the tips of the infected tooth roots and to reseal the tooth.
This is a minor dental procedure, but it is a bit more complex than a standard root canal.
- Dental Abscess Drainage
If you have a dental abscess, we will need to drain it, especially if you have developed a pimple on the gum. A small incision is made into the gum, and a tiny rubber tube is inserted to allow the pus to drain.
We may need to leave the rubber tube in for a day or two to allow the drainage process to finish. You will likely be prescribed antibiotics to eliminate the infection. At this point, we can reassess the tooth to determine whether it is still infected and whether it can be saved or must be removed.
- Aftercare Instructions
After receiving endodontic emergency treatment, we will provide clear instructions on how to care for your mouth while it heals and how to keep it clean and hygienic. If we have prescribed medications, we will explain exactly how to take them and when, or we will discuss using suitable over-the-counter medications.
You will almost certainly need a follow-up visit, and we can schedule this before you leave the dental office. Of course, if you have questions at any point, then please remember that we are here to help you. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
