What is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen uses the same clear plastic aligner trays as Invisalign for adults. The system works in a broadly similar way, but is specifically adapted to accommodate teeth and jaws that are still growing and developing.

Just like Invisalign for adults, each set of aligner trays is worn for 10 to 14 days before being replaced with the next set in the series.

However, the system includes several important modifications that can improve treatment outcomes. Not every teen will require these modifications, but they are there if needed and include:

1. Compliance Indicators

These are blue coloured dots located toward the back of each aligner tray. As the aligners are worn, the dots gradually fade.

Good compliance is essential for Invisalign treatment to work correctly, but we are aware that some teens may be tempted to leave their aligners out for a while or forget to wear them entirely. Compliance indicators provide an easy, unobtrusive way to check that the aligners are being worn properly.

2. Smart Force Attachments

Smart Force attachments are used to provide more precise tooth movements when required. They are made from tooth-colored composite resin and are small buttons or handles bonded to teeth.

These attachments are very discreet but help increase the pressure available to reposition teeth and the bite, giving the aligners something to grab onto. Even with increased pressure, treatment remains gentle and relatively comfortable.

Sometimes Smart Force attachments are used in adult treatments as well.

3. Precision Wings

These are another type of attachment used when more complex issues need to be corrected, for example, an overbite. They work by repositioning the lower jaw, so teeth bite together more accurately.

Using precision wings can be a useful way to reposition the lower jaw. Treatment can also help create a more aesthetically pleasing facial profile.

4. Replacement Sets of Aligners

We know that teens can easily misplace things, including aligners, which is why Invisalign will provide a limited number of replacement aligner sets. These can be ordered through our dental office and will be ready for pickup soon afterward.

It is essential to replace any missing or damaged sets of aligners promptly. Otherwise, it can prolong treatment or mean it is less successful.

The Treatment Process for Invisalign Teen

Every Invisalign treatment follows a similar process, and below is a brief explanation of what to expect.

1. Consultation and Diagnostic Imaging

Our Invisalign dentist will need to examine your teen’s teeth to ensure this treatment is suitable and will provide the desired results. During this consultation, we can also answer any questions you may have about treatment and this stage.

The next step is to digitally scan your teen’s teeth using a small handheld scanner. This is fast, non-invasive, and comfortable, and provides a 3-D digital dental impression that we use to plan treatment. We may also take digital photos and other diagnostic imaging as required.

2. Treatment Planning

Invisalign’s proprietary software is used to plan treatment accurately, using 3-D digital dental impressions and digital photos. As part of this process, you and your teen will be able to preview digital images showing how their teeth are expected to look after treatment is complete.

Invisalign shouldn’t take any longer to complete than ordinary fixed braces.

3. Wearing the Aligners

After finalizing the treatment plan, we order the computer-generated aligners and will show your teen how to insert and remove them and when to progress to the next set. We also provide clear guidelines on how to use them every day, as they should be removed only during meals and for oral care.

4. Invisalign Checkups

We will need to see your teen every 6 to 8 weeks to ensure the treatment is progressing as planned. If needed, we can make any adjustments to the treatment plan and supply more sets of aligners.

5. Invisalign Retainers

After your teen wears their final set of aligners, they will begin wearing the retainers instead. Invisalign Vivera retainers are made from the same clear plastic, but this stage of treatment is far more comfortable as teeth are no longer moving.

These retainers must be worn continuously initially, just like the aligners. Wear time can be gradually reduced as the teeth settle into their new positions; we will let you know when it’s safe to reduce it.
